Non-toxic Summer Skincare Essentials!

Updated: Sep 2

We are excited to share the sunscreen + nature spray we are loving this summer. They actually work, benefit your child's health and aren't destructive to the earth we live in.

Let's dive in ;) and chat about sunscreen. There are two types of sunscreens; chemical + mineral based. When in doubt our number one tip is always pick a mineral sunscreen.

Mineral Based Broad Spectrum Sunscreen That Nourishes

What to Avoid:

Chemical sunscreens filter the suns rays by literally creating a chemical reaction! They absorb the UV rays then convert them into heat which is then released by the skin.

1. Oxybenzone and octinoxate are two chemicals that are often used in sunscreens and have both been linked to the destruction of our coral reefs. Oxybenzone is a known endocrine disruptor + allergen. Octinoxate can cause reproductive toxicity + also disrupt hormones.

2. Aerosol is an ingredient found in sunscreen 'mists' + sprays. Aerosol mists contain propane and are highly flammable which we often lather all over our littles!

3. Fragrance is another top offender as it is almost always found in most popular sunscreens. It is a big no-no when choosing products because 100's of chemicals can be masked with the ingredient label 'fragrance', so you really have no idea what you are putting on your body. Why would these companies not just disclose the ingredients for what they are, not as 'fragrance', seems a bit fishy!

What to Buy:

Mineral based sunscreens act as a physical block to the suns rays. They create a barrier that works to reflect UVA + UVB light. Non-nano zinc refers to the particle size (it is larger) and therefore cannot penetrate into your blood stream, so make sure you are choosing a sunscreen that specifies the use of non-nano zinc. Mineral sunscreens are wonderful for kids + grownups alike! However, the problem with most mineral based sunscreens on the market is they can be very thick in consistency and leave a white residue.

Why We Love BeautyCounter Sunscreens:

BeautyCounter sunscreens are all mineral based + use non-nano zinc. They are free of all chemicals including, oxybenzone, octinoxate, aerosol and fragrance. They go on smooth, feel weightless and smell divine. They are truly the best working and safest option I've found for myself + littles. BeautyCounter also has a sunscreen for every occasion! The mist + stick are both great for littles who are running wild (all about that quick application), the daily face SPF perfect for Mom + Dad, and the 'all in one' nourishing lotion (this one is my absolute favorite because its so hydrating + nourishing to the skin).

All Natural Nature Spray That Bugs Can't Stand

Let's Talk DEET:

The EWG says "We urge consumers to handle DEET with caution. It is known to irritate the eyes and in intense doses it may induce neurological damage." Don't get us wrong if we traveled to somewhere with malaria, west nile, etc. we might be tempted to use DEET. For warding off pesky bugs in our backyard on a daily bases - no way! So if you can find a safer all natural option like this one (that is also great for pets) why wouldn't you give it a try?

Why We Love Primally Pure Nature Spray:

This spray is DEET free yet is still able to keep the mosquitoes at a distance! It contains powerful essential oils of Citronella (proven ingredient to protect against mosquitoes bites), Cedarwood (effective against ants, ticks + other insects), Lemongrass (close cousin to Citronella and when together, they work even better!), Rosemary, Geranium, Peppermint + Wintergreen! This nature spray not only works but smells incredible and is something I can feel good about spraying on my littles every evening when they are playing outside in the kiddie pool or on the trampoline. It gets even better, take 10% off your first Primally Pure order with code happyhealthylittles.

Still not convinced it's worth it to invest in safer skincare? We suggest heading over to the EWG and finding out for yourself how safe the sunscreen + bug spray you are currently using are. You might be surprised what you find!
